The biggest and probably the best snooker club in Grimsby
the Ray Edmonds Snooker Centre
Ray Edmonds has been a household name in the Grimsby area for many years due to his success as a snooker and billiards player worldwide as well as on the local scene.
He won two World Amateur Snooker titles in the early seventies together with English and CIU Championships and numerous local titles.
Having seen the growth of Professional Snooker in the late seventies including many of his former amateur rivals he decided to join the Professional ranks, probably when he was a little too old.
With only moderate success on the table he was lucky enough to be asked to join the commentary team at ITV, which helped him to become better known.
When snooker was approaching its peak in popularity with the public, and only old style billiard halls in the Grimsby area, Ray felt that there may be a demand for a new style of club.
And so, in December of 1983, the Ray Edmonds Snooker Centre was born. More modern, licensed, and with thirteen full size tables and an atmosphere that appealed to the whole family including youngsters. Such was the success of the venture, that a further eight tables were added shortly after and later, another six.
The playing conditions have always been kept to a high standard in order to attract the keenest of players, but still cater for everyone.
In 1985 Ray won the World Professional Billiards Championship. This gives Ray the unique distinction of being the only player to have won this title as well as two World Amateur titles at snooker.
Ray retired from commentary in 2004 and decided at the same time to hand over the reins of the club to his son Alan who by then was already a partner in the business. Much to be expected, as all dad’s do, Ray still sticks his oar in from time to time!!!!!
